Skunks

Background

Central Texas is mainly home to the striped skunk, but spotted skunks and hognose skunks can also call our region home. They are nocturnal omnivores and eat a variety of foods including insects, rodents, eggs, reptiles, amphibians, and even dead matter. They have very few predators due to their obvious defense mechanism.
Fun Facts

-
Skunks have a limited supply of spray, so they only spray as a last resort. They will use their front feet to stomp first as a warning sign.
-
They can aim their spray and tend to go for the eyes!
-
Skunks eat bees.
Skunk Concerns

Skunks in your yard
You can put ammonia on rags or spray coyote urine around the deck where the raccoon is living. Usually within a few days, the skunk will find a new home.

Skunks can be affected by rabies and distemper. While a rabid skunk is uncommon in Central Texas, we ask that you are careful. Please make sure to keep your pets up to date on their vaccinations. If you see a sick skunk, contact your local Animal Control for help.
Please do not trap and relocate skunks. Not only does this open up the niche for another critter to move in, relocating a wild animal can be harmful. You are taking an animals out of an area they are familiar with, and dropping them off in a place where they don't know the food and water sources or the roads. If you are having trouble with a skunk, please give us a call for more help!
