Mexican free-tailed bat

Background

Bats are flying mammals! They eat thousands of insects each night, providing a hugely beneficial service to our ecosystem. Most bats are nocturnal and roost mainly in caves. Austin is home to over one million the Mexican Free-Tailed bats, among other species.

 

Fun Facts

​

  • Bats are the only flying mammal.

​​

  • Bats use echolocation to find food in the dark.

​​

  • The world's largest bat colony is in Texas in Bracken Cave.
