Coyotes

Background
Coyotes are canines native to the US. They are known as a keystone species which means they play an important role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. They provide rodent control and help maintain biodiversity by keeping certain small mammal populations in check. Coyotes eat a wide variety of food including deer, rabbits, rodents, birds, lizards, fish, fruit, and bugs.
Fun Facts
-
Coyotes can run up 40+ mph.
-
Coyotes are extremely vocal and make a variety of sounds.
Coyote Concerns
Coyote deterrents – motion lighting, loud noises, odor deterrents (cayenne, ammonia, wolf urine), don’t leave out pet food
Coyotes are fearful of humans – loud noises and banging on pots will send them running
Mange - coyotes can suffer from mange which can cause them to lose their fur. Unfortunately, there is not an easy way to trap a coyote since they are larger mammals with wide territory range. If one is caught, we can treat it and return it to the wild.
Austin Animal Center is great resource for coyote information and talking with their wildlife officers.
