Lindsay's Adventure with Doves

In the spring of 2021, I looked up and noticed a nest constructed from branches and leaves. I observed two mourning doves taking turns bringing sticks and building a nest, and a couple of weeks later, I saw two little doves nestled inside. Over the next few months, I noticed the baby doves sitting on the ground, minding their own business. Concerned for their safety due to my rambunctious Frenchie, I kept a close watch. Before long, the baby birds had disappeared, and I hoped they had successfully flown the nest and embarked on their new lives.

The following year, my husband cleaned out the gutters, including the nest, and I was disappointed not to see the doves return.

In 2023, the parent doves returned to the same area and rebuilt their nest. Unfortunately, no baby doves appeared that year.

This spring, the mourning doves returned to their home, and I could hear the chirps of little ones from above. They had two rounds of babies within a short period. I believe one baby is from the first clutch, and the second is from the second clutch.

We absolutely love that the doves return every year. My now three-year-old daughter loves checking on them daily, providing a wonderful opportunity to teach her about Texas's native birds.
